Six years ago, she returned to H.T. Klatzky & Associates to work as an art director. She graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth where she received a bachelor of fine arts degree with an emphasis in graphic design. Mike Scholtz is the agency's new associate creative director. Scholtz was most recently a senior writer at H.T. Klatzky & Associates. His extensive background includes stints as a freelance writer, a documentary filmmaker and an English teacher in Japan. He is also cofounder of the Free Range Film Festival, a showcase for independent film held annually in Wrenshall, Minnesota. Gunderson interned at H.T. Klatzky while he attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. After graduation, he was hired as a graphic designer, a position he held for a year. He graduated from UMD with a bachelor of fine arts degree with an emphasis in graphic design.
Sure, it’s about helping clients grow, and, of course, it’s about helping the agency grow right along with them. But it’s about more than that too. It’s about giving the whole community a boost. It’s been over 30 years since Howard Klatzky started H.T. Klatzky & Associates, working with a handful of retail clients from a small office in Duluth’s West End. It has since grown to become the largest advertising agency in Duluth and the region, with a client roster of 25 businesses and organizations in healthcare, tourism, finance, retail, education and more. And as the agency has expanded, so has its commitment to pro bono work. “It’s important for us to give back to the community,” said agency president Howard Klatzky. “And not only because of the opportunities I’ve found here. It’s amazing to see how one small act of generosity can pay off in the lives of others.” In 2003, the agency worked in conjunction with the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation to promote civility in the Twin Ports. Entitled Speak Your Peace, the project was designed to encourage local citizens to communicate in a more respectful and effective way, therefore increasing participation in civic activities. The campaign promoted nine simple tools for practicing civility: Pay Attention, Listen, Be Inclusive, Don’t Gossip, Show Respect, Be Agreeable, Apologize, Give Constructive Criticism and Take Responsibility. Speak Your Peace was the agency’s largest pro bono campaign ever, and included logo design, all identity materials, television, outdoor, radio, newspaper, public relations, a video and a kickoff event. As a result, several government entities, including the Duluth and Superior City Councils, the school boards for the Duluth and Superior school districts, the St Louis County Board of Commissioners and the Douglas County Board of Supervisors, passed resolutions supporting the project and pledging to do their parts in contributing to civility. Another project that stands out came to HTK in the early 1980s, a time when Duluth was on the decline. Jobs, and people, were leaving in proverbial droves, and a general feeling of malaise hung over the city. In order to inspire optimism and promote positive changes, HTK worked with the Duluth First Banks, in cooperation with the city, to develop a campaign entitled “We’re Duluth and Proud of It.” Advertising and promotional materials, particularly bumper stickers emblazoned with that slogan, were soon spotted everywhere. “Negative perceptions and attitudes can be tough to overcome,” said Klatzky. “Both of these campaigns took them on. It was a good feeling.” And the agency’s good works haven’t stopped outside the Redstone’s walls. “I’m also proud of our great staff members, many of whom choose to volunteer for some terrific causes on their own,” said Klatzky. “We’ve got a great group—including several board members, past and present board presidents and even a campaign strategist or two.” Other nonprofit groups that have benefited from HTK’s generosity include:
Klatzky said that the agency’s commitment to pro bono work is stronger than ever, and hopes that the list of beneficiaries will continue to grow. “As long as there is an HTK, we will be doing pro bono work,” he said. WE’RE TOPPIN’ OFF ANOTHER BIG PROJECT
Happily, a new roof containing environmentally friendly recycled materials is being installed by ATK Enterprises, Inc., a commercial roofing and construction firm. Andler Klatzky, president of ATK, (and son of H.T. Klatzky president and founder, Howard) carefully chose the slate-look tiles to match the building’s original tiles.
Designed by renowned architect Oliver G. Traphagen and built in 1892, the Redstone has been on the National Register for Historic Places since 1974. From 1897 to 1908, the Redstone served as home to mining tycoon Chester Congdon and his family while they awaited the construction of Glensheen mansion. It has been the home of H.T. Klatzky & Associates since 1987. |
