Welcome to the Redstone. This three-story Victorian mansion in Duluth, MN, was designed by the city’s renowned architect, Oliver G. Traphagen.
Construction of the duplex house was completed in 1892. Years later, it was converted to a nine-unit rental property. It remained as such for nearly 70 years, and was on the verge of being condemned when, in 1986, Howard Klatzky bought and restored it for use as offices for
H. T. Klatzky & Associates.
Mining tycoon Chester Congdon and his family lived in the Redstone from 1897 to 1908, while their new home, the famous Glensheen Mansion, was being built.
The Redstone is Victorian in design. Its most interesting exterior features include a somewhat ornate carved redstone facade, with towers, conical roofs, unusual dormers and stone window dressing. The other three sides of the building are of a more ordinary red brick construction.
Simply put, this is one really cool building.
